Anti-ice shield assemblies protect aerospace engines from the ravages of ice buildup. One of Component Repair Management’s customers contacted them to perform salvage repairs of aluminum anti-ice shield assemblies to original specifications so they could continue in service. These 6061 aluminum assemblies required replacement of their fitting blocks, back plates, and feet, all of which Component Repair accomplished by applying their welding, blending, and metal fabrication skills. The aluminum anti-ice shield assemblies also received heat treatment and abrasive blasting to bring them to their as-formed state, and required no additional finish. Customer specifications as well as the Garrett Engine maintenance manual required all the work to be performed to tight tolerances of ± 0.020". Fluorescent penetrants were used to perform final inspections, a simple and cost-effective way of eliminating defects from critical aerospace components. Component Repair performs salvage repairs on 30 to 60 of these aluminum anti-ice shield assemblies per month and delivers them directly to the customer’s dock.
